In the United States, the drug type that has caused the most overdoses in recent years are Narcotics. Narcotics are a class of drugs that can relieve pain and/or cause sedation. Opioids are classed as Narcotics and are often used interchangeably in modern times. Examples include fentanyl, heroin, oxycodone, codeine, and morphine.
Naloxone (Narcan) :
Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name, Narcan is an opioid antagonist. Meaning, its purpose is to combat the effects of opioids. Narcan blocks the brain from getting the effects of opioids, and restores breathing during an opioid overdose. Most commonly, it comes in the form of nasal spray, but can also be administered by injection. Narcan can be purchased online and at drugstores.
Syringe exchange programs :
Syringe exchange programs have a number of different services, but in the context of opioid use, it provides clean syringes and needles, as well as ways to discard used ones. One of the most common ways opioids are used is via injection. Using needles more than once or using needles that have been used by someone else is incredibly dangerous. There are risks of infection, HIV, and Hepatitis C. These problems, combined with the preexisting dangers of narcotic use can be fatal. Sterile needles keep people safer while they are still suffering with addiction.
